Article: Cook issues challenge to Col Gaddafi

FOREIGN Secretary Robin Cook today issued a new challenge to Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi to hand over the two prime suspects in the Lockerbie bombing.

Last night's statement from the Libyan foreign ministry that it would accept the "new position" of the UK and the US, while at the same time calling for the lifting of UN sanctions, was "welcome as far as it goes", said Mr Cook.

It could, in fact, be seen as the most positive response from Tripoli in the seven years since the warrants for the two Libyan suspects were issued.

But Livingston MP Mr Cook insisted Colonel Gaddafi's government had to go further and meet the principal British and American requirement - the surrender of the suspects ...
