Article: Amazon books future as sales rocket 79per cent

ONLINE retail giant Amazon.com has amazed market analysts with the strength of its sales which were today reported to be 79 per cent up.

The news follows the firm's announcement last week that sales could top $1 billion in the last quarter of 2000.

Best known to shoppers on the internet as a site for cut-price books and CDs, the firm credits its current success to a boost in sales of electronics goods.

A statement released by the firm stated losses had dropped to GBP 46.9 million, or 17 pence per share, in the third quarter of 2000, compared to GBP 54.5m a year before.
