Article: Russia to Destroy Tanks, Armored Vehicles Under CFE Treaty

Russia will destroy thousands of tanks and armored vehicles as stipulated by the treaty on the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE), a key arms reduction pact, a senior official in the Defense Ministry said today.

The official told the press that Russia will demolish 3,520 tanks and 5,684 armored vehicles before the CFE treaty takes effect on November 16.

Russia will retain 6,400 tanks and 11,480 armored vehicles in Russia's European part.

The treaty, signed in 1990 by members of NATO and the now-defunct Warsaw Pact, calls for major cuts in the number of tanks, artillery pieces and other equipment in an area stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals.
