CHEYENNE Teens adhering to a strict vegetarian diet may have
problems getting nutrients, especially if eggs and milk are avoided,
said Leisann Stolz, a registered dietitian at United Medical Center -
West.
Without eggs and milk, "it's hard to meet the protein needs to
sustain growth," she said. Protein helps the body manufacture
enzymes, antibodies and hormones.
Before committing to a vegetarian diet, Stolz recommended
adolescents 12 to 17 years old be aware of their body's nutritional
needs.
According to Stolz, there are three types of vegetarianism:
Lacto-ovo, which includes eggs and dairy products but excludes
meat poultry and fish.
