Sherry Cheatham dreamed of working on Capitol Hill, where she
would help draft government policy as a player behind the scenes of
the Oval Office.
"I wanted to run behind the president," Cheatham, 42, said
recalling a vision that seemed so real to her as a 26-year-old who
had just been honorably discharged after six years in the Army
National Guard. "But that's when I got introduced to crack cocaine,
and it blew my dreams."
Drugs blew away her dreams and almost her life as she spiraled in
and out of addiction and prison for crimes she committed to support
her habit. Self-esteem shattered, rejected by her family, she landed
