SEAN PENN doesn't look, act or talk much like a Hollywood movie star. True, the 41-year-old actor/director more and more resembles Robert De Niro's long-lost brother as he gets older but when he enters the suite at the Sheraton Hotel to meet the assembled press, he carries the genuinely modest air of a reticent film director.

He seems very far removed from "the greatest American screen actor" as he was recently dubbed by Time magazine and a world away from his former tag, "Mr Madonna", bruising scourge of paparazzi.

But Sean Penn has arrived in Edinburgh as a director and most definitely not an actor or - God forbid - "movie star". His new film The Pledge, his third as a director, is ...
