Chinese Premier Li Peng said that in the coming 15 years China
will control population growth and protect resources and the
environment so as to achieve a coordinated and sustained economic and
social development.
China will continue to publicize its family planning program in
order to enhance the nation's awareness of the population problem, he
said.
At the Fourth Session of the Eighth National People's Congress
which opened here today, Li delivered a report on the country's Ninth
Five-year Plan (1996-2000) for National Economic and Social
Development and the Long-term Target for the Year 2010.
China's goal is to keep the total population under 1.3 billion by
