Village head Wangzha was the first person in his Tibetan village to attend school after the peaceful liberation of Tibet in 1951.

After graduating from Lhasa Teachers College he opened the first school in Shexing village of Deqen county, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, where he had grown up.

He helped pave the way for education for the next generations of village children.

Having taught for more than 20 years in the school, Wangzha said proudly that at present, more than 80 percent of school age children in his village have attended school. The school has opened courses in Tibetan language, Chinese and Mathematics.
