Sam Cooke, in his way, was as smart as Elvis. Like the Tupelo
Honeymonster he had an instinctual gift for reconciling what seemed
at the time to be irreconcilable musical styles, and then marketing
them in an utterly cool yet inoffensive way. Unlike the Monster, he
was black. Pop, R&B, Gospel, country, schmaltz - they're all in the
Cooke canon and they all come out of the mixer with soul. Which isn't
of course to say that they're all great. But most of them are. Cooke
