The northern Thai city of Chiang Mai will host celebrations in
mid-April for the Water Festival that marks the start of a new year
for the Thais, Khmers, Laotians, Myanmar people and China's Dai
ethnic group.
Scholars and dancers from five countries Thailand, Cambodia,
Laos, Myanmar and China will gather in Chiang Mai for the first
such
joint festivities, which run from April 12 to 15.
Participants from China are those from the Dai ethnic group in
Xishuangbanna, Yunnan province in Southwestern China.
The Thai Foreign Ministry is hosting a seminar today on "Water
Festival in Five Countries: Comparison in Cultural Aspects" in
Chiang
Mai, dubbed the "rose" of northern Thailand.
