Article: Major Facing Threat from Referendum Party Chief

British Prime Minister John Major now is facing a threat in the run-up to the general election from Sir James Goldsmith, leader of the Referendum party.

In an interview with BBC radio today, Goldsmith pledged to launch a 20 million pounds (30 million U.S. dollar) campaign to field 600 candidates in the next general election scheduled for May 1997.
