Leader of the United Front (UF) H.D. Deve Gowda was sworn in as
India's new prime minister here today at a simple ceremony presided
over by President S.D. Sharma.
India witnessed two governments in the past fortnight. The
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government headed by A.B. Vajpayee was
forced to resign on the floor of the parliament on May 28 due to its
failure to muster enough support from MPs.
The 13-day-old Vajpayee government was the shortest government in
India's history.
The 11th Lok Sabha (Lower House) general elections from April 27
to May 7 resulted in a hung parliament, with none of the parties
emerging with a working majority in the House.
