Article: Latin American Nations Reject U.S. Helms-Burton Law

The foreign ministers of Paraguay, Mexico, Chile and Bolivia today expressed their rejection of the so-called Helms-Burton Law which the United States enacted to tighten the blockade imposed on Cuba.

The foreign ministers, who are attending the 26th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) scheduled to end this Friday, criticized the U.S. Helms-Burton Law during the meeting although the issue is not on the agenda of the assembly.

Paraguayan Foreign Minister Ruben Dario Melgarejo said that the Helms-Burton "is a unilateral measure that alters and exercises influence over other countries," adding that the Rio Group condemned the law because of its extraterritorial scope.
