Nigerian Head of State Sani Abacha yesterday announced the establishment of the national defence policy committee in a bid to strengthen the defence system of the country.

Against the backdrop of recent events and developments in the strategic global environment, therefore, the government is, by this move, aiming at an improved defence policy.

Besides strengthening the system, Abacha also approved an enhanced welfare package for the armed forces. The measures were announced at the graduation ceremony of the National War College course four in Abuja, capital of Nigeria.

Membership of the committee will be drawn from the military and the academia.
