Article: Educational Level Low in Greek Rural Area

One in four Greeks living in rural areas has not finished elementary school, while 75 percent of those living in these areas have not completed the nine-year period of compulsory education.

The results of the most recent census conducted in the country show that illiteracy is widespread, mainly among women. University professor Maria Iliou said Greece has one of the highest women's illiteracy rates in the developed world and even among third world countries.

In 1991, 80 percent of those who were illiterate were women, while one out of two women living in the Greek rural areas was considered illiterate. Today things have improved, but the number of illiterate women in the provinces remains ...
