Article: World Bank Chief Foresees Debt Relief Agreement Soon

James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank Group indicated here today that the international community was near agreement on a debt relief plan for poor countries.

Wolfensohn told a press conference prior to the World Bank-International Monetary Fund (IMF) joint annual meeting that he expected the first cases to be dealt with by yearend.

"I think we're very close to reaching a positive and productive agreement that will allow us to proceed immediately on specific cases," he told the crowded press conference. However, the World Bank chief also noted that details remain to be worked out, and that the Paris Club of creditor nations have not yet announced their specifics part of the debt ...
