Article: U.S. Import Quotas Harm Costa Rican Textile Industry: Report

United States import quotas have undermined the Costa Rican textile industry, especially the underwear sector, causing a loss of 6,000 jobs, said Foreign Trade Ministry authorities.

The United States imposed on Costa Rica in June 1995 an annual quota of 14.4 million dozens of underwear pieces with a yearly 6 percent increase.

"Quotas have prevented the growth of the textile industry and affected investment in Costa Rica last year," said Anabelle Gonzalez, international negotiations director of the Foreign Trade Ministry.
