Article: Arab League Chief Warns of "New Intifada"

Secretary General of the Arab League Esmat Abdul-Meguid has warned of eruption of grassroots Arab uprising against Israel if the Jewish state put aside the agreements it had signed with Arab parties.

"Now If Israel does not implement all what it has promised, there will be a new intifada," the Arab League's chief said in an interview with the local daily An-Nahar, which was published today.

The 1987-91 intifada, in which the Palestinians expressed their anger by throwing stones, compelled the Israeli government of former Likud Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir to hold face-to-face negotiations with the Palestinians.
