Article: Highway to be Moved to Protect Thousand-Year-Old Grottoes

A highway situated in front of a group of thousand-year-old buddhist grottoes in north China's Shanxi Province will be moved early next year.

The re-routed roadway will be put to use in 1998, at an estimated cost of more than 90 million yuan, according to government officials.

The grottoes are located in Datong, a major coal-producing city in China.

Every day, at least 18,000 coal trucks travel the highway in front of the grottoes, and pollution caused by the excessive dirt and dust they stir up, as well as the heavy vibrations they produce, has affected and brought some damages to the ancient structures.
