More than ten grottos dating back 1,500 years have been found in
this capital of central China's Henan Province, home of the
well-known Longmen Grottos.
As a capital and a Buddhist center for many dynasties, Luoyang had
a myriad of grottos where Buddhists performed their rites.
The Xi'ao Grottos, in Xinan county, have four pagodas and two
grottos. Inscriptions there have helped in the study of the style of
grottos of different periods.
