Article: Cambodia Expects WTO Membership Next Year

Cambodian Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh expects his country to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) by the end of 1997, a local newspaper reported today.

The English-language Cambodia Daily quoted Cham Prasidh as saying Sunday that "Cambodia will enter the WTO after the country joins the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and we expect to be a member (of the WTO) by the end of next year."

The minister made the remarks after attending last week's four- day ministerial meeting in Singapore of the 120-member international organization, of which Cambodia is an official observer. "If we are late to join the World Trade Organization, we are left alone in trade," said the ...
