As Canadians move closer to the federal election expected as
early
as next spring, experts and opinion polls indicate no other party
would be strong enough to beat the ruling Liberals.
Entering the fourth year of its mandate, the Liberal Party still
enjoys an approving rate of 47 percent nationally. Its leader Jean
Chretien remains by far the most popular federal leader, with 63
percent approving his performance as prime minister.
According to the Southam News-Angus Reid poll done early this
month, the Liberal's nearest competitor, the Progressive
Conservative, is holding only 18 percent, which is a record high for
a party reduced to two parliamentary seats in the last election.
