Article: Famine Looms in Kenya's Lake Victoria Region

Economic activity and food production in Kenya's Lake Victoria Region are now threatened by the rapidly-spreading water hyacinth in the Lake Victoria, said a report compiled by the Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

Fish production is expected to fall by a big margin this season and further in future if the weed is not controlled, the report noted.

The report paints a bleak future for the fishing industry of Nyanza Province along the lake which accounts for more than 50 percent of the fish consumed locally and exported.
