Economic activity and food production in Kenya's Lake Victoria
Region are now threatened by the rapidly-spreading water hyacinth in
the Lake Victoria, said a report compiled by the Kenyan Ministry of
Environment and Natural Resources.
Fish production is expected to fall by a big margin this season
and further in future if the weed is not controlled, the report
noted.
The report paints a bleak future for the fishing industry of
Nyanza Province along the lake which accounts for more than 50
percent of the fish consumed locally and exported.
Thousands of fishermen and middlemen who earned a living from
fishing related activities, are now rendered jobless.
