Article: Saudi Arabia Strives to Join WTO

Saudi Arabia pledged to try every effort to satisfy trading partners and commit itself to observing rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in a bid to join the world trade body by 1997.

The official Kuwait News Agency reported that Saudi Arabia made the promise Wednesday at a WTO working party meeting held in Geneva to study Saudi Arabia's application to join the WTO.

Saudi Arabia held its first talks with the WTO in Geneva in May. Experts and diplomats said Riyadh thought the advantages of joining the WTO outweighed disadvantages even if it placed Saudi economic policies under international scrutiny.
