Article: Population Growth Rate Slows in Sweden

The rate of population growth in Sweden in 1996 was the lowest for 14 years as the number of births and immigration fell, the Central Statistics Bureau reported.

The population rose just 8,000 in 1996 to 8.845 million, with 1.744 million living in the capital, Stockholm, and its suburbs.

Some 95,000 babies were born in 1996, 8,000 fewer than in 1995. The bureau said Swedish women are delaying childbirth until later in life and are having fewer children than in the past. ...
