More than 8,000 lumbermen in southernmost Hainan Province have
turned to other kinds of jobs, after their tree-felling jobs were
axed.
It follows a local policy to protect forests by completely
closing
down its lumbering industry, a move started in January 1994.
The decision, designed to protect valuable tropical trees, has
affected three forestry administrations and 11 three-cutting units
in
the island province. The policy has led to some 24,000 lumbermen
becoming jobless.
To combat the measures, the forestry enterprises have taken
various steps to help former lumbermen and their families to start
new lives.
