Article: Lumbermen Face Jobs Axe in Hainan

More than 8,000 lumbermen in southernmost Hainan Province have turned to other kinds of jobs, after their tree-felling jobs were axed.

It follows a local policy to protect forests by completely closing down its lumbering industry, a move started in January 1994.

The decision, designed to protect valuable tropical trees, has affected three forestry administrations and 11 three-cutting units in the island province.
