France Adopts New Law to Fight Racism

The French government today adopted a new law to fight more effectively racism which is fueled by the far-right National Front (FN) party.

The law was prepared by Justice Minister Justice Jacques Toubon, who said that the new law gives a clearer and stricter definition of racist remarks and behavior.

The law is to tighten the fight against racism which he said has become "an everyday phenomenon" in France. The decision to draft the new law, which will replace one adopted by the parliament in 1972, was stimulated by the recent clash between FN leader Jean-Marie Le Pen and many politicians, including Prime Minister Alain Juppe, over Le Pen's repeated declaration that he believes in racial ...
