Britain's ruling Conservative Party's MP Sir George Gardiner has decided to resign as the Conservative whip and join the country's Referendum Party, according to a BBC television report.

The Referendum Party, which wants to have a national referendum on Britain's position in Europe, announced this afternoon that George Gardiner had quit the Conservatives and would represent the Referendum Party in parliament until the general election due to be held in May.
