China has approved state standards for health food, which will
take effect on May 1, 1997, according to the State Bureau of
Technical Supervision.
The standards define and classify health foods, and include
technical requirements, testing procedures, and regulations on
labelling.
Health food products are classified in 13 categories according to
their effect on the body, and technical requirments state that
health
food must enhance human health in at least one way.
