Article: Egyptian Court Rejects Ban on Female Circumcision

An Egyptian court today overturned a ban on performing female circumcision in hospitals, putting an end to the government's campaign to exterminate a popular ritual in this largely Islamic country.

This ruling will allow the operation to be carried out in all state and private clinics. But amateurs are banned to do the delicate job though it is common that midwives and barbers are entrusted in poor urban and rural areas.

Judge Abdul Aziz Hamade said the court overturned the ban because it was imposed a year ago without parliamentary approval, rather than making a statement on the nature of the female ...
