German Chancellor Helmut Kohl launched today in Berlin a pact
aimed at creating 100,000 additional jobs a year in eastern Germany.
At a meeting unveiling the Joint Initiative for More Jobs in
Eastern Germany, Kohl called the plan "a good and important signal
for the buildup of the East and a good sign for Germany as a
industrial base."
Defying widespread doubts from the business community, Kohl said
he was still sticking to the goal to cut unemployment in eastern
Germany by half by the year 2000.
Under the pact unveiled today, the German government, employers
and trade unions agreed to make common efforts to boost the eastern
German economy, and in particular to secure current jobs and ...
