Article: Kohl Launches Job Plan for Eastern Germany

German Chancellor Helmut Kohl launched today in Berlin a pact aimed at creating 100,000 additional jobs a year in eastern Germany.

At a meeting unveiling the Joint Initiative for More Jobs in Eastern Germany, Kohl called the plan "a good and important signal for the buildup of the East and a good sign for Germany as a industrial base."

Defying widespread doubts from the business community, Kohl said he was still sticking to the goal to cut unemployment in eastern Germany by half by the year 2000.
