Article: Japanese Government Quibbling Over Taiwan Straits

Despite criticism by China, the Japanese government continues to violate international law by claiming that an ongoing review of its 1978 defense arrangement with the U.S. covers the Taiwan Straits.

Speaking at a news conference, Japan's Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kaoru Yosano reiterated the view that new guidelines for the Japan-U.S. defense cooperation should include handling emergencies in the Taiwan Straits.

"Emergencies in surrounding areas, under the guidelines, are defined in accordance with the nature of the occurrences, not geographical concepts," the deputy government spokesman said. His quibbling echoed remarks by Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiroku Kajiyama in a TV interview ...
