Article: Iranian President Calls on Iraq to Release Iranian

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami today called on Iraq to comply with its international commitments and free the Iranian prisoners of war (POWs) still held in Iraq.

The Iranian president made the call in a meeting with the former POWs to mark their return in 1988, according to the official news agency IRNA.

The POWs is one of the major issues that block the improvement of bilateral relations between the two former enemies who fought a bitter war from 1980 to 1988. Iran claimed that Iraq still holds more than 15,000 Iranian POWs according to the documents it has. But Iraq repeatedly rejected the claim.
