Israel Welcomes Cypriot Bi-communal Direct Talks

Israel has welcomed the opening of direct talks between Cypriot
President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash,
expressing the hope they will lead to a peaceful settlement of the
protracted Cyprus problem.
Cyprus News Agency reported today that a spokesman of the Israeli
Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed his country's congratulations
to the leaders of the two communities for attending the
U.N.-sponsored direct talks held at Troutbeck, near New York, from
July 9 to 12.
