Late starts will be commonplace in the offices and businesses of
the British Isles over the coming month and a half. "Leaves on the
railway line" may not be the reason but they will certainly be used
as an excuse by the millions of fans who will be tuning in to watch
the early-morning broadcasts of the 2003 Rugby World Cup from
Australia rather than dashing to work.
The tournament is likely to be the biggest betting event of the
year. Forty-eight matches in 44 days will provide a staggering number
of opportunities, from outright win bets at one extreme to the more
perilous "spreads" on such markets as the points totals in games or
