The locking of the Yangtze mainstream in November 8 will not
result in a surge in its water level, said a Chinese water
conservation expert here today.
"The water level may rise only four meters even in floods that
statistically occurs once every 20 years, and will remain so until
the end of the century when the first installed generating unit
produces electric power," said the expert with the China Yangtze
River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation.
The river-locking in early November may lift the water level of
Yangtze by only less than one meter during dry season, from the past
66 to 69 meters, he noted.
