Article: State Duma Fails to Approve 1998 Budget in Second

Russia's State Duma, lower house of Parliament, on Wednesday failed to approve in second reading the federal budget bill for 1998, according to the Itar-Tass news agency.

After three rounds of voting the document was short of just one one vote to be passed. A total of 225 lawmakers voted for, while 226 voted against.

Numerous amendments were made to the draft in the course of debate on the second reading. Speaker of the State Duma Gennady Seleznyov said that the outcome was not politically motivated, simply "a lot of amendments were turned down during the debate."
