Israeli police decided on Friday to step up security protections
for all candidates for the prime minister during the current
election
campaign.
This decision was made following Thursday's incident in Tel Aviv,
in which the life of Amnon Lipkin-Shahak was threatened by a local
resident.
Shahak, the newly retired chief of general staff of the defense
force and one of the prime minister's candidates, did not see many
smiling faces Thursday in his first campaign foray into the
traditional Likud territory of the outdoor Hatikva market in south
Tel Aviv.
