Three hundred and thirty two Italians donated their organs for
transplant in 1998 in northern Italy , a 11.4 percent increase over
the previous year.
Girolamo Sirchia, chairman of the northern organ transplant
association, said in Milan that there were 18.5 donors per million
people in north Italy, which ranked fourth in Europe.
He said that 1,131 transplant operations were performed in 1998,
a
0.6 percent rise from the 1,069 operations in 1997.
