The fourth Summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern
Africa (COMESA) is scheduled to open in Kenyan capital Nairobi on
Monday and Tuesday
Following are some of the major progresses the African
sub-regional economic organization has made toward its goal of
establishing a free trade area by October 31, 2000.Since its
establishment in 1994, COMESA has made remarkable progress in trade
liberalization, transport facilitation, tariff barriers removal,
and
financial and monetary systems.
For the final removal of all tariffs on goods and service
originating from within the COMESA countries, 14 of the 21 member
states had already reduced their tariffs by 60 percent to 90
