Article: Chengdu Attracts More Overseas Tourists

Some 82,000 overseas tourists visited this capital city of southwest China's Sichuan Province in the first half of this year, up 41 percent over the same period of last year.

Chen Xiaoquan, director of the Chengdu City Tourism Bureau, attributed the increase to a big rise in the number of tourists from Southeast Asian countries which are recovering from the region's worst financial crisis.

According to the latest statistics, some 5,200 tourists from Thailand and 7,200 from Singapore visited the city in the first six months, compared to over 1,000 and 3,500 in 1998.
