Canadian western province of British Columbia has closed sockeye
fishery along Fraser River due to a drastic shortfall in returning
fish.
The move, which means losses of millions of dollars, is dealing
another blow at British Columbia's troubled salmon industry, media
reports said Saturday.
The closure came after the country's Pacific Salmon Commission
recommended action Friday, with sockeye returns expected at 40
percent of usual predictions.
Only three million sockeye will return to the river to spawn this
