New Bacteria Key to Wastewater Treatment Discovered

A microscopic bacteria discovered by Australian researchers has
the potential to revolutionize wastewater treatment and reduce water
pollution around the world, the Australian Associated Press (AAP)
reported Monday.
Researchers at the University of Queensland's Cooperative
Research
Center (CRC) for Waste Management discovered the Nitrospira
bacteria,
which converts the harmful form of nitrogen in waste water, nitrite,
to the less harmful nitrate, the news agency said.
CRC Ph.D. student Paul Burrell, who worked on the project, said
most bacteria could then convert the nitrate to harmless nitrogen
gas.
