Speaker of the House of Representatives Jose de Venecia is the presidential bet picked by President Fidel Ramos for the Philippines' ruling Lakas-NUCD (National Union of Christian Democrats) party in the May 11 elections.

Although having lagged far behind the main opposition candidate Vice President Joseph Estrada in many opinion polls, the 62-year- old veteran politician has not been discounted by his rivals and many pundits.
