The Russian candidate for premier Sergei Kiriyenko was approved by members of the Federation Council, or the upper house of parliament, at a round-table meeting on Tuesday.

Chairman of the Federation Council Yegor Stroyev told reporters after the meeting that Kiriyenko had won the respect of regional leaders when he spoke to the Federation Council on April 2 and evaluated the country's economy.
