Article: Registration Ends for Iran's Experts Assembly Elections

A total of 396 candidates have registered for the election of Iran's Experts Assembly which determines the country's supreme leader, local daily Zan (Women) reported on Saturday.

The battle for the control of the powerful body between the moderate and conservative camps is expected to intensify as the elections date, set on October 23, is nearing.

For the first time since the formation of the Experts Assembly in 1983, nine women registered for the election.

President Mohammad Khatami, a leading figure in the left-wing Society of Combatant Clergymen (SCC), has said he has no intention to run for the election.
