Chronology of Hong Kong New Airport

Following are the major events in the development of the new Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok in a chronological order:

Oct. 11, 1989 The plan to construct a new airport at Chek Lap Kok was announced by the then Governor of Hong Kong, David Wilson, as part of an overall port and airport development strategy.

Sept. 3, 1991 The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Chinese and British governments, who gave their firm support to the airport project and the rest of the Airport Core Program.

Nov. 30, 1992 Award of the 9.04 billion HK dollar (1.16 billion U.S. dollar) site preparation contract which encompassed the formation of the 1,248-hectare platform at Chek Lap Kok ...
