Article: Share Prices Plummet in Tokyo on Wall Street Tumble

Stock prices plunged in Tokyo on Friday with the key Nikkei index briefly slipping below 14,400 for the first time in more than three weeks, following an overnight tumble on Wall Street.

The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 402.16 points, or 2.72 percent, from Thursday's close to end at 14,405.64, after moving between 14,382.06 and 14,729.95.

The broader-based Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX), covering all First Section issues, dropped 21.62 points or 1.90 percent to 1,118.16. Turnover on the major section more than doubled to about 787 million shares from Thursday's 360.41 million shares. ...
