But since she set it up it has almost doubled in size, and sells everything from clothes to furniture.

And its takings have just reached pounds1 million - raising about pounds750,000 for the charity.

Mrs Whitehead, 77, founded the Westbury shop in 1997 and has been manager ever since.

She is no stranger to volunteering, having set up the first British Red Cross charity shop in the UK more than 30 years ago.

"I left the Red Cross and, within a month, opened the air ambulance shop. I said I did not think that it would take off, but it did and it has been wonderful," she said.
