Stock prices closed mixed in Tokyo Friday, with the key Nikkei index briefly topping 20,000 for the first time in almost three weeks.

The Nikkei Stock Average of 225 selected issues on the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 253.48 points, or 1.29 percent, from Thursday's close to end at 19,958.08, after trading between 19,697.57 and 20,012.41.

The broader-based Tokyo Stock Price Index (TOPIX) which covers all First Section issues, however, lost 10.95 points, or 0.66 percent, to 1,640.60.

Turnover on the major section increased to 759.72 million shares
